How to use Pinterest to drive traffic to your wellness blog
Pinterest is the second biggest driver of traffic to my blog after Google. And I only spend one hour a week on my strategy.
Unlike social media platforms like Instagram or twitter, Pinterest isn’t a hungry monster, always needing new content and constant attention.
You can create pins with the right text, image and keywords that will keep driving traffic to your website for weeks, months and years to come.

These steps will make a lot more sense if you watch the video above and follow along with the advice. Get your notebook ready!
1. Start a Pinterest account
If you haven’t got a business or blog Pinterest account, start one now. Follow the instructions to add a headshot and description to your Pinterest page so that uses will know what to expect from you.
2. Create 30-40 Pinterest boards
Try to think about Pinterest as a visual representation of your brand.
Remember: You aren’t one dimensional, and neither should your Pinterest account be.
Even if your own blog or business just does ‘one thing’, try to create boards that encompass everything that your ideal customer might be searching for. This is a really fun step, so enjoy it! 3. Switch to a business account
Just like on Instagram, it’s important to set your Pinterest account up properly from the beginning to gain all the benefits of the analytics to improve your strategy each week. Follow the instructions to switch to a business account as soon as possible.
4. Get Rich Pins
Rich pins are an upgrade on your regular Joe Pinner. They highlight the title and encourage users to click through to your website which is exactly what you want!
If you don’t know which type to go for, I would recommend using Article Rich Pins as they’re really versatile. These can always contain products or recipes within them. Convert to Rich Pins by following the instructions.
5. Turn on Pinterest buttons on your website
To actively encourage your readers to pin your content to Pinterest for themselves, make sure you switch on Pinterest buttons on your website. This is a great little trick to encourage other people to pin your content, which is a bonus in addition to your own Pinterest strategy.
This means for every image on your site, you’ll get a little Pinterest logo appear when they hover their cursor over it, so the image can be added directly to the user’s own Pinterest account.
As a Squarespace users I can switch this functionality on using my settings in Marketing. For WordPress users there are lots of plugins to do this. Try this guide which might be helpful.

6. Design your own pins
Use canva.com to design your own pins. Browse their massive range of templates to find something that works for you. If you want to design your own pin from scratch, remember the ideal dimension for pins are 600 px x 900 px.
When you’re done, download the pin as an image file - JPG or PNG.
7. Add your pin to your website (optional)
Add your pin to your blog post or website page, just like you would a normal image. I always save mine at the bottom of the blog post, and put a little ‘call to action’ above it e.g. “Like this recipe? Pin it to Pinterest and save it for later!”
This step isn’t essential (some people don’t like having Pinterest images on their website) but it does encourage users to save the content themselves to their own account, which adds to your reach on the platform.
8. Pin the image to your Pinterest account
Go to your Pinterest account and click on the red cross in top right of the screen, and upload your image there.
Remember it’s very important to add a key-word rich description to your pin and the URL you want the pin to link back too.
Key-words are the words that people might be searching for in order to find your content.
So for a date and tahini cookie recipe, I need to include key-words like “healthy eating”, “healthy snack” or “refined sugar free snack.” Try to make your descriptions into sentences, because random words look spammy.
Your description should also include your website or brand name.
Pinterest does also accept searches via hashtags now, but don’t use more than 5.
9. Add your pins to multiple boards
Don’t just save this pin to one board, save it to loads! For example for my date and tahini cookies, I would save my pins to:

This is why it’s really important to have a good spread of 30-40 boards for you to pin to.
10. Create multiple pins for one piece of content
You might be thinking - I don’t have that much content yet, how can Pinterest help me? The beauty of Pinterest is that you can create multiple pins for one blog post or website page.
For example with my date and tahini cookies, I will create a pin with text on it, but I will also pin images of the recipe with no text in different shots to Pinterest. This way there will be lots of different versions to entice Pinterest users to click on the content and visit my website.
11. Use Tailwind
In order to maximise my one hour Pinterest time, I use Tailwind. This powerful scheduling tool enables me to upload pins to multiple accounts and the same time, rather than doing it individually.
Tailwind also allows me to schedule pins 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. This is a huge advantage because Pinterest sees that I am a very active Pinner and will prioritise my content in searches.
